A careful expansion and modernization of amenities in Williamsburg’s beloved Maracuja bar, completed ahead of a major gut renovation of the building’s upper floors. The second floor houses an apartment, while the third and newly added fourth floors form a penthouse. On the ground floor, the historic Polish club’s sign was maintained, its existing letters reodered and new ones fabricated with a matching font into the Maracuja bar name, for passerbys to wonder... “Was it always like this?”. A distinctive corrugated cement façade on Grand Street—tinted in a custom ‘in-house’ tobacco tone, the first of its kind in Brooklyn—redefines the building’s presence while winking to the historic bar’s once smoky interiors.  Upstairs, natural and textured materials take precedence, including shou sugi ban, reclaimed yellow pine, artisanal tiles, and bush-hammered stone, grounding the new spaces in a sense of calm and permanence.
