We understand the act of building and design as a dense set of actions that require a sensitive consideration of the past, present, and future.

Our inspirations are diverse and wide-ranging— as curious omnivores, we believe rich and varied references strengthen the tonalities of a project. Our muse is the ancient Greek mythology Oceanid, Mêtis, Mother of Athena, and known for her intuition, sensible reactions, and practical intelligence engaged in action. Like her, METISMETIS likes to operate in ambiguous and moving terrains.

We design spaces and objects through new associations, conversations, tweaks, translations, and play. METISMETIS has a particular affection for tacit knowledge—crafts, know-how, mental models—and practical intelligence, valuing flexibility, efficiency, and repairability. We value details and believe that purposeful gestures enhance the quality of living. For us, design extends into the process of making- into the means and methods of construction and our close collaboration with fabricators, craftsmen, and builders.
