A renovation and addition to an existing family home in an enveloping Connecticut forest. The surrounding vegetation and changes in terrain presented an opportunity to connect with the outdoors both visually and physically. We focused on facilitating our client’s new program needs by carefully reconfiguring the spaces within the existing structure and efficiently positioning the new addition against a steep hill on the property.  For the addition’s facade, METISMETIS imagined an exterior that ages and desaturates with time, in conversation with the layers and textures of the existing structures. New casement windows allow for a clearer visual connection to the exterior, while the vertical wood paneling inside the existing structure maintains a conversation with the forest. Wood’s warm internal presence is continued in the new extension, but its application is flipped, as the walls are primarily painted and the ceiling is finished with wood paneling.
